Gangotri Temple is located in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand, India.

It is situated at an approximate height of 3,100 meters on the Himalayan range, which holds a special place in the heart of Hindu people.

It is one of the important pilgrimage sites of Chota Char Dham Yatra and one of the four sacred in Uttarakhand, which lies in the Gharwal Himalayas. It represents Ganga, Bhagirathi, & other figures of mythology. 

✓ It is one of the holy places and a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Ganga who is the prosperity of purity and fertility. It is also the origin of the Ganga, also known as the Ganges River.

   Gangotri Temple History

The construction of the Gangotri Temple dates back to 1707, when it was built by the Nepalese General Amar Singh Thapa.

He was part of the army of Sudarshan Shah, the Garhwal king. In the 20th century, the Maharaja of Jaipur rebuilt the temple.

✓ The Gangotri Temple boasts the Nagara Style of architecture and is crafted from white marble adorned with intricate carvings. Five small Shikars, each standing at 20ft in height, add to its grandeur.

From May to October, this temple is open for worship. Thousands of pilgrims visit the temple to pray to Goddess Ganga.

In 1803, this temple was damaged in a fire, but In 1905, it was rebuilt by the Maharaja of Jaipur in the same style.

✓ In 1932, this temple was damaged due to an earthquake.

In 1962, during the Indo-China War, this temple was closed to pilgrims.

The temple was reopened to pilgrims in 1974, and a road was constructed to provide easier access.

✓ In 2023, this temple is immensely facilitated; people can reach there by Road, rail, and air.

✓  Gangotri Temple contains the idol of the goddess Annapurna, Yamuna, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. Four small temples are dedicated to Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Hanuman, and Bhagirathi.

There is a Shivling which is under the water. When you visit there, you will see the Shivling.

Gangotri Temple is one of the highest temples dedicated to Goddess Ganga.

The source of Gaumukh is the river Ganges, also referred to as Bhagirathi in that location.

Gaumukh temple near Bhagirath Shila is where Lord Shiva freed Ganga.

    The town of Gangotri is connected by the Highway from major cities like  Dehradun, Delhi, and Rishikesh.
    Regular buses and taxis are efficiently running between these cities and Gangotri. Direct buses are also running daily for several regions of Uttarakhand. By Road, it takes 6-7 hours to reach Gangotri by bus, which costs INR 100- 200.
  • By air:
    Jolly Grant Airport
    in Dehradun is the nearest airport in Gangotri. From Delhi, there are daily flights. Also, flights to other major cities near Gangotri. From Dehradun, you can take a bus to reach Gangotri.

    Rishikesh Railway Station
    is one of the nearest railway stations in Gangotri.
    A daily railway runs from Delhi and other major cities to Rishikesh. From Rishikesh, you can take buses to reach the Gangotri.
