Gangotri is a small temple which is located in the Uttarkashi District that is in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is 99 km far away from Uttarkashi, the main district headquarters of India. It is about 30 kilometers in length and 4 Kilometers in Width, and also surrounded by several highest peaks like Chaukhamba, Shivling, and Meru. It is a municipality that is around the Gangotri temple which is one of the holy places and also a celebrated place for the Hindu pilgrimage. It represents Ganga, Bhagirathi, & other figures of mythology.

The history of Gangotri is a complex one to explain, that dating to the Hindu traditions.

According to one legend, The god Shiva bought the Ganges river down to the earth which river was washed away the sins of King Bhagiratha’s forebear, and Hindus revered it. Later that temple was built by Jaipur’s Maharaja.

✓ In the 15th century, the first temple at Gangotri was built and it was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Amar Singh Thapa. This first builder temple is dedicated to the Goddes Ganga which is one of the most important sites in India.

In the 19th century it becomes a more popular destination for pilgrims from all over the world and also one of the best places to escape the bustle and hustle in their everyday life.

According to the 2011 census of India, there are a total of 47 families settled in Gangotri. The total population of Gangotri is about 110, out of them 97 are males and 13 are females. The overall population of this town people is identified as Hindu

The children aged 0-6 are 0.00% of the total population of Gangotri. The literacy rate of this city is 99.09% in the male literacy rate and the female literacy rate is 100% & 92.31% respectively. 

According to the 2023 census of India, there are approximately 152 population settled in Gangotri. Due to the covid, the census of 2021 was postponed. 

Agriculture, tourism, and government service are the main occupation of the people of this town. Wheat, barley, and rice are the most grown crops in Gangotri.
